My plan is to have both of those lenses, and I already have the 70-200mm/f2.8 Z. On the F mount, I also have the 70-200mm/f2.8 AF-S VR ii (but not the latest FL; hence I went for the Z version) and the 80-400. Since I shoot a lot of wildlife, the 80-400 and something even longer is very useful. To me, the 80-400 is a great lens for whale watching.
Photography Life Review Summary: The new Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II is clearly a better lens than its predecessor. As can be seen from the image examples in this review, the performance of this lens is outstanding at maximum apertures throughout the focal lengths and the new VR II system clearly helps in getting shake-free images at low shutter
The Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD is a fast telephoto zoom lens for Canon, Sony and Nikon full-frame DSLR cameras. This compact lens features a constant aperture of f/2.8 throughout the range, Vibration Compensation (VC) technology, and an ultrasonic focus motor for quiet AF operation, and a moisture-sealed construction.
The story is similar here. The highest performance is found on the Nikon Z 70-200mm f/2.8 due to its performance at f/2.8 and f/4, but it’s extremely close in the shared aperture range. I’m very impressed by how well the Nikon Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 does here, since the Z 70-200mm f/2.8 is the sharpest zoom lens I’ve ever measured.
At 70mm, the Nikon 70-200mm f/4G VR yields better contrast from center to corners than the 70-200mm f/2.8G VR II, which is very impressive. The Nikon 70-200mm f/4G seems to start off a tad worse in the center sharpness-wise, but yields better corner performance wide open (again, my lab tests confirm this).

The Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2 is a second-generation telephoto zoom lens for Canon and Nikon full-frame DSLR cameras. This compact lens features a constant aperture of f/2.8 throughout the range, improved Vibration Compensation (VC) technology, a shorter minimum focus distance of 0.95m, an ultrasonic focus motor for quiet and fast AF operation, and a moisture-sealed construction.
The Tamron SP 70-200 mm f/2.8 Di VC USD complements this lens well in terms of focal length range. It’s a combination with which you’re perfectly prepared to go traveling—bright, reasonable compact (for lenses designed for full-frame) and solidly built. The shortest focal distance of less than a meter also makes great close-up shots possible.
